Selena Gomez Opens Up for the First Time About Her Breakup With The Weeknd

Something tragic in pop culture happened on October 30, 2017: After dating for 10 months, Selena Gomez and The Weeknd announced that they had broken up. This news truly signified the end of an era. The days of Gomez and The Weeknd steaming up the Met Gala carpet, flying thousands of miles to hang out, and bragging about each other on social media were over. And in their place we have—yet again—Gomez and Justin Bieber drinking iced coffees before church services. Sigh.

Gomez and The Weeknd’s recent social media activity suggested their split wasn’t as amicable as we previously thought. First, they unfollowed each other on Instagram, and then a few days ago The Weeknd purged his profile of all Gomez photos. It’s one thing for them to just break up—it’s something altogether different (and worse) if they’re not on good terms.

But don’t worry: They are still close. These Instagram moves must not mean much, because Gomez contends in her new interview with Billboard magazine that she and The Weeknd have a “true friendship.”

“Something that I’m really proud of is that there’s such a true friendship [between me and The Weeknd],” she told the magazine. (This is her first time speaking publicly about their breakup.) “I truly have never experienced anything like that in my life. We ended it as best friends, and it was genuinely about encouraging and caring [for each other], and that was pretty remarkable for me.”

So there you have it, people: There’s no bad blood between Gomez and The Weeknd. Feel better? Same. Maybe this means I can now fully get on board with Gomez rolling around in J-Bieb’s sweaty hockey uniform. Maybe.
